Max Factor demonstrates the beauty micrometer, 1935

Though this strange scary-looking device resembles a medieval torture, it was invented by make-up legend Max Factor (Maksymilian Faktorowicz) to help in the identification of the areas of a person’s face which need to have their appearance reduced or enhanced by make-up. This gadget was called the beauty micrometer or the beauty calibrator. Max Factor’s device was primarily intended for use in the movie industry and helped him better understand the female face.

The inventors stated that there are two key measurements that they looked for: the heights of the nose and forehead should be the same, and the eyes should be separated by the width of one eye. But the device did not gain widespread usage. There is only one beauty micrometer, nowadays it is displayed at the Hollywood Entertainment Museum.
