The longest protest beard ever

Valentine Tapley a Democrat from Pike County, Missouri swore that he would never shave if Lincoln were to be elected. Tapley kept his word and after Lincoln’s victory his beard was unshorn from November 1860 until  his death in 1910. It grew to 12 feet 6 inches (3.8 m). Tapley turned down many offers of fame and fortune because of his beard. He got offers of as much as $5,000, (nearly $125,000 in today’s money), to display his beard on an exhibition in a London Museum, but refused to be a side show freak.  By the way, Valentine Tapley was so paranoid that his beard would fall victim to grave robbers that he requested to be buried in a fortified coffin.
