Marathon runners training for the first modern Olympic games, Athens, 1896. The length of the marathon then was 40 kilometres (25 mi). Spyridon Louis from Greece won the race with the result 2:58:50. By the way, during the marathon Louis made a stop at a local inn to drink a glass of wine, just to refresh himself.
